Public Education Forums Will Move to Phase II "Issue Forums" in January 2007Thanks for your interest and participation in the first phase of the community forum series focused on promoting quality public education in the City of St. Louis. Nearly 500 people turned out for the first round of forums, with a core group of 135 attendees participating in two or more of the six sessions. In the New Year, the forum series will move to Phase II, focusing on critical issues facing the St. Louis Public Schools and engaging key stakeholders in efforts to develop and implement specific strategies to provide quality public education for all children. Before moving to the next stage of "Issue Forums", however, three informational sessions will be held to provide forum series participants with critical information on recent and upcoming developments related to the St. Louis Public Schools. Those sessions, beginning in January 2007, will focus on: • The report and recommendations of the Special Advisory Committee on the St. Louis Public Schools issued on December 15, 2006 • Review of the Annual Performance Report (APR) on the St. Louis Public Schools issued by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), as well as the forthcoming recommendation of the State Board of Education on accreditation of the school district • New bills in the Missouri Legislature that might have an impact on provision of public education in the St. Louis schools. You will receive e-mail notification as forums on the above topics are scheduled, but you also can check the St. Louis Children's Agenda/VCR web site at http://visionforchildren.org to keep abreast of developments related to the forum series and the SLPS. Note: Since the final forum in the series "A Public Dialogue on Public Education" was held on December 14, the major development related to the St. Louis Public Schools has been issuance of the final report and recommendations of the Special Advisory Committee on the St. Louis Public Schools. That report and a variety of related support materials are available on the Special Advisory Committees web site at: http://www.slps-committee.org/ Happy Holidays! |
